Profs. Chiu (left) and Lei (right): collaborative research

Abraham Chiu’s research includes two areas of geotechnical engineering: (1) the engineering behaviour and constitutive modelling of unsaturated and contaminated soils and (2) the development of laboratory testing equipment.

The primary focus for his present work on unsaturated soils is the gas exploitation related geomechanics issues in methane hydrate bearing sediments. His current research in contaminated soils involves chemical-based solidification/stabilisation and bio-remediation. He is a member of the editorial board of Environmental Geotechnics and Technical Committee TC308 on Energy Geotechnics of the ISSMGE. He spends his leisure time rock-climbing and cross-country running.
